Woman escapes early morning fire

The lone occupant of a Mount Vernon home was able to escape without injury early Thursday morning as a fire extensively damaged her home.

According to Mount Vernon Fire Chief Jim Brown, his department received a call at 1:19 a.m. about a blaze in a house at 423 Forest Ave. He said it took about four hours to completely extinguish the flames and secure the scene.

Leaders from the St. Louis Chapter of the American Red Cross said they were able to assist the fire victim with food and clothing in the aftermath of the fire.
