Belleville police: Charges likely soon in West Main shooting

Charges will likely be pressed on Thursday against the suspect involved in a shooting at an apartment building in Belleville, according to police.

Police arrested a man Tuesday and continue looking for other suspects involved in the shooting. Police have declined to release the identity of the suspect until he has been formally charged.

The shooting happened just before 1:30 p.m. Monday at 7701 W. Main St.

A male victim was taken to a local hospital after he was shot in the lower extremities. The injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Witnesses reported hearing up to 15 shots fired from two different guns directed at three or four men sitting in a car at the apartment building. The shots sent residents and neighbors fleeing for cover.

Belleville Police Chief Bill Clay and St. Clair County Sheriff Rick Watson will discuss the shooting at a meeting of the West Belleville Promotional Committee at 8 a.m. Friday at the Lindenwood-University-Belleville Welcome Center.
