Belleville man charged with restraining wife, spraying house with lighter fluid

A man living in unincorporated St. Clair County near Belleville has been charged with restraining his wife inside the bathroom of their home, threatening her with a knife and spraying the house with lighter fluid before the woman escaped unharmed.

Robert A. Jones III, 33, of the 900 block Peony Drive, was charged Thursday by the St. Clair County state's attorney's office with aggravated unlawful restraint, domestic battery and attempted aggravated arson, according to a statement issued by the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department.

The incident at Jones' home took place late Wednesday night. Jones turned himself in to the Sheriff's Department shortly after midnight Thursday.

Jones remains in the County Jail in Belleville with bond set at $50,000.

Two sheriff's deputies showed up at the victim's home at 10:07 p.m. after receving a phone call from Jones' wife, who was able to free herself and flee to a neighbor's house to notify police.

The victim reported that she had been tied up and bound with electrical cords and pieces of clothing. She also reported that her husband held a knife to her throat, according to the press release.

One of the deputies reported smelling a strong odor of a flammable substance from inside the house. The Northwest Fire Department responded to secure the residence.

During the search of the house for Jones, the deputies found a firearm, according to the press release.
