Make way for the police department: Bank of Belleville finalizes purchases for new home

The Bank of Belleville announced Friday it has finalized purchasing property at 213 and 219 S. Illinois St. in Belleville for its new headquarters.

The bank plans to demolish the existing structures -- which includes the city's Health and Housing and Engineering departments -- and move in by summer 2015.

The bank's current location at 720 W. Main St. will be the new home of the Belleville Police Department.

The City Council voted earlier this year to buy the Bank of Belleville building for $3.1 million to house the Police Department. The building will be retrofitted for about $7 million.

The Police Department upgrade is part of a larger plan to improve City Hall, which will be renovated for about $5 million.

The Police Department's move will free up space in City Hall for the Health and Housing and Engineering departments. In the meantime, the Health and Housing and Engineering departments will operate out of 407 E. Lincoln St.

The Belleville City Council will have a special meeting at 6 p.m. Monday in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 101 S. Illinois St. related to improvements at the temporary site for these departments.
