Coroner: Motorcyclist died after being shot in his head

A motorcyclist who was killed in May died after being shot in the head, according to coroner's statements on three deaths released Friday.

Travis Mayes, 43, of Pontoon Beach, was found dead beside his motorcycle in rural Granite City on May 19. According to the Madison County Coroner's Office, he died of a gunshot wound to the head, and also had a blood-alcohol level of .171.

Caleb Ryan Bailey, 23, of Pontoon Beach has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder in Mayes' death. Police at the time said they had a long-running disagreement over a woman.

Frances Ragan, 42, of East Alton died on Feb. 8 of hypothermia, according to the reports. Found in the cab of a U-Haul van in South Roxana, Ragan was intoxicated with methadone, methamphetamine and citalopram, which the coroner determined was significant and contributed to her death, which was ruled accidental.

Henry Whitford, 65, of Granite City was found dead at his home on June 18. The coroner determined he died of acute hydrocodone intoxication and had also used marijuana. Whitford had been known to abuse hydrocodone in the past. His death was ruled accidental.
