One person was killed and two were injured -- including one who was airlifted to an area hospital -- Sunday night following a head-on accident on Illinois 158 near Millstadt.
A 21-year-old woman, identified by the St. Clair County Coroner's Office as Courtney Brown of Belleville, was killed in the accident.
Just before 7 p.m., the Illinois State Police said Brown was headed east on Illinois 158 near its intersection with Limestone Lane when she lost control of her 1998 Ford Escort, which veered off the highway to the right.
Brown over-corrected and swerved across the road into oncoming traffic, striking a 2009 Toyota Camry head on. The Toyota was then rear-ended by a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.
Brown was pronounced dead at 7:56 at the scene of the crash.
The injuries are not believed to be life-threatening for the Toyota driver, 15 and operating the vehicle on a learner's permit, and her 40-year-old passenger, Joshua Phelps. The teenager was taken to a St. Louis hospital by ambulance while the adult was airlifted by helicopter.
The driver of the pickup, Dennis Dohrman, 57 of Columbia, was not injured.
Illinois 158 was closed for about 2 1/2 hours while rescue workers extracted the driver from the Ford and then investigated the circumstances surrounding the crash.
State Police spokesman Calvin Dye Jr. said it has not yet been determined what caused Brown to lose control of her car.
