A Belleville man who hoped to unseat state Rep. Eddie Lee Jackson in the November election has withdrawn his candidacy.
Frazier Garner had filed to run as an independent. Then, on June 30, an objection to his candidacy was filed by Marvin Strode of Washington Park, who is a Democrat. Before the state could rule on the objection, Garner withdrew his candidacy, on July 14.
Garner could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.
The basis for Strode's challenge to Garner's candidacy wasn't immediately clear. Such challenges typically claim that a candidate didn't correctly fill out forms or gather signatures on candidacy petitions.
Garner's withdrawal means Jackson, a Democrat, will be unopposed in this fall's election. Jackson could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.
Jackson is a former school principal and has been a state representative since he was appointed to the position in 2009. In 2012 he defeated Republican challenger Ryan Stookey.
The 114th House Disrict is a U-shaped district that covers the East St. Louis area and then wraps around Belleville, stretching to areas such as Millstadt, Freeburg, Mascoutah, Lebanon and O'Fallon.
