A rural Fosterburg man was killed Monday morning after he was run over by a car in his driveway as he waited for a ride to a hospital, Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn said in a statement Tuesday.
According to the statement, Donald L. Smith, 76, was experiencing dizziness and decided to go to the hospital. He was leaning against the side of his garage in the 2600 block of Jamison Drive shortly after 10 a.m. while his wife backed the car out to take him to the hospital.
The wife, identified as JoAnn Smith, told police she felt the Ford Expedition roll over something as she backed out of the garage. Authorities said it appears the husband collapsed onto the driveway before the vehicle ran over him.
Alton Memorial Hospital and Fosterburg Fire Rescue ambulances responded along with Madison County Sheriff’s Department deputies. Donald Smith was pronounced dead in the emergency room at Alton Memorial.
According to Nonn’s statement, an autopsy completed Tuesday revealed Donald Smith died of severe blunt trauma to his chest. Nonn also said “significant cardiovascular disease was also noted.”
Funeral services were pending at Gent Funeral Home in Alton.
