Softball Cougars move into first place
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball Cougars switched spots in the Ohio Valley Conference standings with Jacksonville State on Saturday after a doubleheader sweep at Cougar Field.
SIUE ran its OVC record to 11-1 with a 2-1 victory in game one and an 8-2 triumph in the nightcap. The Cougars are now 29-7 overall. Jacksonville State fell to 7-2 in the OVC and 23-10 overall.
The Cougars have two more games this weekend with a noon doubleheader Sunday against Tennessee Tech at Cougar Field.

In game one, SIUE’s Haley Chambers struck out 13 for her 17th victory of the season. Chambers improved her OVC-leading strikeout mark to 195 in the victory.
In game two, Baylee Douglass improved her season record to 11-3 with a six-strikeout effort.
Lady Lynx drop two to Lyon
The Lindenwood University-Belleville Lady Lynx lost 6-2 and 4-0 to the Lyon College Scots on Saturday.
LU-Belleville (15-17, 8-4) were held in check in both games the Scots (20-11, 14-2).
The Lady Lynx return to action on Monday when they host William Woods. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Bearcats score doubleheader sweep
LEBANON The McKendree University baseball team used a potent offensive attack and a pair of strong starting performances on the mound to post a doubleheader sweep Saturday at home against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. The Bearcats stormed to a 13-3 victory in the opener before pulling away in game two for an 8-1 triumph.
McKendree improves to 7-17 overall and 6-10 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The Bearcats will host the Rangers again on Sunday to wrap up a four-game weekend series, with first pitch at Hypes Field scheduled for noon.
At the plate, McKendree collected 27 hits on the day, including 17 in the opener. Sophomore infielder Tyson Boehne (Carlyle) led the charge with five hits against UW-Parkside, including three in the game one win.
On the mound, sophomore right-hander Jacob Renfrow allowed five hits over eight shutout innings of work in game one to collect his first victory of the season. Renfrow walked three and fanned one batter in his 122-pitch effort.
Junior left-hander Sam Lidisky (Althoff) tossed his third complete game of the year. Lidisky scattered six hits and gave up just one earned run with a walk and five strikeouts.
SIUE falls in 10th inning to Belmont
Belmont’s William Dodd poked a two-out RBI-single into left field in the bottom of the 10th inning Saturday lifting the Bruins to 7-6 win and a series victory over the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougars.
SIUE dropped to 10-15 overall and 10-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Belmont improved to 16-12 overall and 7-3 in the OVC.
Zach Malach (1-1) suffered the loss. Malach came into the game with a runner at first and no outs in the 10th. Belmont designated hitter Nick Egli laid down a bunt which was misplayed by Malach. Tyler Walsh then reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Joseph Stovall bounced back to the mound where Malach threw home to start a double play, leaving runners at second and third and one out for Dodd.
SIUE will play the next four games at home. The Cougars play host to Western Illinois on Tuesday at Simmons Complex and will stay home to take on Eastern Kentucky on Friday through Sunday. First pitch Tuesday is 6 p.m.
LU-Belleville drops twinbill to Owls
Jared Linton collected a solo home run and two doubles Saturday in the doubleheader loss by the Lindenwood Unviersity-Belleville Lynx (13-20, 9-8) to the William Woods Owls (23-7, 10-4).
In game one the Lynx were limited to just a solo home run from Linton in a 4-1 loss to the Owls. Mike Sabatino (3-4) suffered the loss after going seven innings allowing six hits and four runs.
In game two, William Woods scored a 2-1 win in 11 innings. Dylan Skinner (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound after pitching the final 3 1/3 innings. Dylan Arvai started the game and went 7 2/3 innings allowing six hits and one earned run.
Next up, the Lynx will travel to Freed-Hardeman on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
McKendree earns women’s lacrosse win
The McKendree University women’s lacrosse team had seven players score on Saturday in a 18-1 victory at Alderson Broaddus University.
The Bearcats improve to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and will host their conference home opener on Friday against Lake Erie College at 1 p.m.
Paige Salthouse led all players with five goals, while Mia Fiore added four goals in the victory.
Tennessee Tech defeats Cougars
Tennessee Tech used the momentum it gained during doubles play and went on to a 5-0 victory over the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougars in Ohio Valley Conference men's tennis action.
SIUE fell to 8-10 overall and 3-4 in the OVC. Tennessee Tech improved to 7-12 overall and 5-1 in the OVC.
SIUE now has its final two matches of the season at home. The Cougars play Eastern Kentucky next Saturday and Morehead State on Senior Day next Sunday at the SIUE Tennis Courts.
