A 46-year-old Edwardsville man will have to pay $45,000 back to an 85-year-old woman from whom he stole thousands of dollars from after he befriended her.
Dennis Miller was charged in December 2016 after the woman’s daughter uncovered that Miller had been asking for loans that he never repaid, and may have been writing checks on her account to himself.
Lt. Charles Kohlberg said detectives say the man stole at least $45,000 from the woman.
“He could have stolen more, but that’s the amount we had evidence to support,” he said.
He was sentenced to 48 months of probation Sept. 20 after pleading guilty to financially exploiting an elderly person and money laundering. He’ll have to pay $25,000 of the restitution to the woman immediately. A second charge of money laundering was dismissed as a part of a plea deal.
