Doing anything special at 10:19 a.m. Thursday?
The Great U.S. Central Shake Out, at www.shakeout.org, hopes you drop, cover and hold on as a drill to prevent injuries during an earthquake. It says millions have already signed up to do so.
Schools including Alton Middle School and Belleville’s District 118 are signed up to participate, as is Columbia’s Police Department and St. Clair County Health Department.
The website www.shakeout.org has a number of resources for earthquake safety, but for Thursday, it suggests people drop to the ground, take cover under a table or desk, and hold on to it for at least 60 seconds as if an earthquake were happening.
To follow up, the Safe America foundation has ways to communicate after an emergency, including its “Text first. Talk second” campaign.
