Tickets are still available for next week’s Armed Forces Ball in Fairview Heights.
St. Clair County officials hope to make the ball an annual event, said John Hughes, director of the Office of Military Affairs for St. Clair County.
“I think it will be good thing and educational thing for the community,” Hughes said. “No doubts this thing will grow in years to come.”
Hughes said the ball, on May 8, is a prelude to the week leading up to Armed Forces Day, which is May 16 this year.
Never miss a local story.
Money raised from the event will go toward military charitable organizations in St. Clair County, such as helping personnel at Scott Air Force Base, Hughes said.
Other cities in the United States including Houston, Los Angeles and Chicago, have Armed Forces balls.
Hughes said there have been smaller events around the county, but no one has done something this big to recognize the contributions of military personnel and their families.
The event will include dinner, a commemorative coin, photos and music from a six-piece band.
Tickets cost $75 each, or $900 to sponsor a table for 10 people.
The ball is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 8, at the Four Points Sheraton at 319 Fountains Parkway in Fairview Heights.
