State Rep. Jerry Costello II, D-Smithton, issued the following statement after Governor Rauner’s budget address Wednesday to the Illinois General Assembly:
"Our state works best when it is working for the people of Illinois. For over two years, the people of Illinois suffered without a state budget, putting services for children, veterans, and the elderly at risk, because the governor refused to come to the negotiating table.
"I hope that Governor Rauner is sincere in his words that he wants to be part of the budget process, and I stand ready to work with him and those across the aisle. It remains my top priority that we get a full-year budget that protects the hard working families of Southern Illinois, invests in our local education system, bring more jobs to the area and keeps our communities safe."
