A man was airlifted to a hospital Friday evening after the truck he was driving left an interstate on ramp and crashed in a ditch.
French Village firefighters and Caseyville police were dispatched to the on ramp to westbound Interstate 64 at Illinois 157 shortly after 5 p.m. and arrived to find a red Ford pickup on its side at the bottom of the ditch off the north shoulder of the ramp. Firefighters cut the top of the truck’s cab away to pull the driver free.
Paramedics tended to the man in an ambulance at the scene until an ARCH medical helicopter arrived to fly him to a hospital. The helicopter lifted off at 6 p.m. The man’s condition is unknown.
French Village Fire Chief Al LaPointe said there was water in the ditch where the truck crashed but it was not deep and did not hamper the rescue of the driver. He said it’s unclear what caused the truck to leave the ramp.
After pulling the driver from the truck, firefighters used thermal cameras to search the crash scene that’s choked with weeds and tall grass to ensure there were no other crash victims.
Fairview Heights firefighters and Illinois State Police troopers also assisted at the scene. The ramp was closed from the time of the crash until around 6:30 p.m.
