Staff at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville on Wednesday said no one was hurt and patient care was not disrupted when a small fire broke out in a laundry chute.
According to a statement from the hospital, fire alarms sounded at 2:55 p.m. “All emergency systems activated appropriately and put the fire out immediately. The Belleville Fire Department is on site to investigate the cause, which is unknown at this time.”
Fire Chief Tom Pour said the fire occurred in the basement of the hospital. He said investigators aren’t sure what caused the fire but said that sprinklers installed within the chute activated and doused it. He said no one was in any danger from the fire.
