The former mayor of St. Jacob is suing a current village trustee over comments she made about his tenure as mayor.
Raymond Muniz was mayor of St. Jacob for 12 years, stepping down in 2013. Patricia Beil was elected as a village trustee in 2011 and is currently on the Village Board.
According to the suit, in statements to the newspaper and published last October, Beil alleged “financial improprieties” by Muniz and called for a “criminal investigation.”
The statements to the newspaper followed an outside accounting firm’s report of “questionable” financial transactions. According to the suit, when asked why she had not turned over the information to the Madison County state’s attorney, Beil said, “I wanted it in the newspaper first.”
Muniz has sued Beil alleging defamation of character, intentional infliction of emotional distress and placing Muniz in a false light. The lawsuit requests compensatory and exemplary damages in amounts not specified. The suit was filed Oct. 27 in St. Clair County.
Muniz’ attorney, Marleen Suarez, could not be reached for comment. Beil has not yet engaged an attorney, according to court records.
