Bikers and runners will hit the streets Sunday morning as part of the fourth annual Get Up & Go Biathlon in Belleville.
The 5-mile run and 20-mile bicycle race kicks off at 7 a.m. at Belleville West High School.
Not a cyclist? No problem.
This year runners can sign up for only the 5-mile run at a lower cost, according to Christy Belsom, one of the race organizers.
"We're hoping to draw in more runners, so they can see what a biathlon is like," Belsom said. "It might charge them up and they'll want to do a biathlon in the future."
The cost for the biathlon is $40 per individual or $52 per team (one runner, one cyclist). The cost for the 5-mile run is $25 per person. Proceeds from the event benefit the Get Up & Go campaign, which was created to help the communities of St. Clair County become the healthiest in America by 2020.
To sign up for the run or biathlon, stop by during early packet pickup from 4-7 p.m. Thursday and 1-4 p.m. Friday at Belleville Parks and Recreation, 510 West Main St. Packet pickup and day-of registration begins at 6 a.m. Sunday at Belleville West, 4063 Frank Scott Parkway West.
About 120 people were registered for the event as of Tuesday morning, Belsom said. But she was confident that the new run option, would encourage more people to sign up.
"Our goal every year is to hit 200. I anticipate us hitting 200 this year," she said.
Last year, 180 people signed up for the big event that takes runners and cyclists along Frank Scott Parkway (which will be closed to motorists) and nearby roads.
If you're not ready to compete, volunteers are needed and spectators are welcome. If you'd like to volunteer, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you'd like to watch, drive out to Belleville West and feel free to bring a lawn chair.
The after party will include awards, food, a DJ and possibly zumba to energize the crowd.
