Last chance to nominate someone for hall of fame
The Highland Illinois Area Schools Alumni Association is looking for help from the public in finding nominees for the 2018 Hall of Fame. Categories are: Arts and Sciences, Business, Career Public Service (those who are paid for their services as part of their job), Community Service Volunteer (unpaid/non-career), and Sports.
Persons nominated must have either attended any school in the Highland School District boundaries or been employed by any of the schools, must have demonstrated a high level of achievement in any of the categories and made a significant contribution to that particular field, and must have exhibited leadership, character, and service.

Nomination applications are available at highlandilalumni.com. Deadline for nomination submission is Jan. 31. A brief resume and contact information for the nominee should accompany the form.
Applications can be mailed to HIASAA, 400 Broadway, Highland, IL 62249. Membership applications can also be found on the website. Dues are $10 per year, $40 for five years, or $100 for a lifetime membership.
Helvetia Township meeting dates
The Helvetia Township Board of Trustees will hold its 2018 monthly meetings at 7 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month at the Helvetia Township Office, 817 Main St. in Highland, with the exception of two that will be held at the township shed, 12466 Buckeye Road.
Regular meeting dates will be on Tuesdays, Feb. 6, March 6, April 3, May 1, June 5, July 3, Aug. 7, Sept. 4, Oct. 2, Nov. 6 (at township shed), and Dec. 4.
The annual meeting is at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10 at township shed.
VFW card party
The Highland VFW Post 5694 Auxiliary has a card party at 1 p.m. on Jan. 30 at the post home, 1900 VFW Road. Admission is $1. Pinochle, euchre and buncho will be played. Hot sandwiches and homemade pies and cakes will be available.
The 14U Insanity select softball team has a cosmic bingo fundraiser on Jan. 27 at the VFW Hall, 1900 VFW Road, in Highland. Doors open at 6 p.m., and bingo starts at 7 p.m.
Cost is $20 in advance or $25 at the door and includes six cards for 10 games, a glow dauber, and a glow hat. Additional six bingo cards are $5.
More than $1,000 in cash prizes will be given away. Bring your own snacks. No outside drinks will be permitted. You must be 18 or older to attend.
All funds raised will be used to cover team expenses, such as tournaments, league fees, helmets, uniforms, umpires, and insurance.

Faith Countryside Homes invites all seniors 60 and older to join them for their fun, food and companionship community meal program. Meals are served Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, in the Countryside Community Center, 1331 26th St. Reservations for the upcoming week should be made by 1 p.m. this Friday. Monday, Jan. 29: Meatloaf, mashed potatoes, gravy, buttered corn, bread, iced oatmeal cake.
Tuesday, Jan. 30: Vegetable lasagna, Italian tossed salad, garlic bread, cinnamon baked apples.
Wednesday, Jan. 31: Taco salad, Spanish rice, corn salad, ice cream.
Thursday, Feb. 1: Roast turkey, gravy, cornbread dressing, Brussels sprouts, dinner roll, pumpkin pie.
Friday, Feb. 2: Grilled pork chop, roasted redskin potatoes, fried cabbage, bread, cherry crisp.
