A work day will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Anderson Cemetery, near St. Jacob.
Richard Schmidt will serve meat jambalaya at noon to workers. Call Roland Harris at 654-5005 (home) or (618) 303-0082 (cell), if you are available. Organizers need your reservation for lunch.
Volunteers will be installing repaired tombstones and Indiana stone markers. Bring a shovel, flat spade, leaf rake, level, wheel barrow, knee pads and tape measure.
Be sure to follow directions to Anderson Cemetery. You have to go around the Frutiger heirs’ field to get back to the cemetery, which is in a pasture with no cattle. Take Old Route 40 west of St. Jacob to Cypress. Turn south. Go about 1/2 mile and turn west on Beeler Lane, driving slow past the houses to the end of this road. Go ahead slowly. You will cross a culvert and go into a picked corn field. Then turn south in this field. Go 1,000 feet to end of this field. Turn west for 1,200 feet; then turn north for 100 feet. Turn west and cross the waterway and go 400 feet west until you come to the pasture fence. Follow the fence west for 800 feet to the entrance to Anderson Cemetery.
Never miss a local story.
If these directions are not clear, call Harris on his cell phone and, someone will come to Beeler Lane to lead you to the cemetery.
Workdays are also planned on Nov. 14 and 21.
