Ronald J. “Pappy” Hessenauer, 70, of Pierron died Friday, May 29, 2015 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, June 5 at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. A memorial funeral service will follow the visitation on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo., at 12:30 p.m.
He was born on Aug. 11, 1944 in Highland to Richard John and Leveda Elaine (Miller) Hessenauer.
Mr. Hessenauer grew up in Old Ripley and attended Greenville High School.

He served with the U.S. Navy from Sept. 19, 1962 to Sept. 13, 1966, with duty on the USS Robinson. He received the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. After his discharge, he served more than 20 years in the U.S. Army Reserves.
He worked for Rasler Plumbing in Greenville after his military services. He also had worked at Charles Todd in Highland for many years and retired from Civil Services at the Melvin Price Service Center in Granite City.
He had enjoyed bowling in several leagues when younger. As a woodworker, he had made furniture for his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed riding his Honda Golden Wing 30th anniversary trike cycle.
He was a life member of VFW Post 5694 in Highland, where he had served as a past commander. He had also been a past commander of VFW District 12. He was also a member of American Legion Post 665 in St. Jacob, the Legion Riders of Troy, and a life member of both Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 269 and the Disabled American Veterans, Jack Graiched Chapter 90.
He was also a member Teamsters Local 525 in Alton and AARP.
Survivors include sons, Daniel P. (special friend Marta) Hessenauer, St. Jacob, Ricky D. Hessenauer of Highland, Scotty R. (Dena Case) Hessenauer of Highland; grandchildren, Ashley Kunz of Highland, Todd Koethe of Troy, Kenna Busch of Jerseyville, David Hessenauer of Edwardsville, Kevin Hessenauer of Edwardsville, Autumn Hessenauer of St. Jacob, Kayla Hessenauer of Highland and Joshua Case of Highland; brothers, Robert (Mary) Hessenauer of Alhambra and Rodney G. (Lori) Hessenauer (twin) of Old Ripley; and his former wife, Mary A. Hessenauer (nee Hencke) of Pocahontas.
He was preceded in death by his father; his mother, who died on April 19, 2014; a brother, Randal Dean Hessenauer (twin), who died on June 8, 2008; sisters, Linda Sue Faith, who died on Feb. 6, 2015, and Cheryl Hessenauer; and a daughter-in-law, Cheryl A. Hessenauer (nee Johnson), who died on Oct. 30, 1994.
