Mary M. “Marge” Hess, 91, of Marine died on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 10 and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 11 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Marine. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 11 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Marine, with Father James A. Flach officiating. Burial will be in St. Elizabeth Catholic Cemetery in Marine. Arrangements are being handled by Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Marine.
She was born on July 9, 1924 in Breese to Paul and Verena (Krebs) Fischer. On Sept. 6, 1947, she married Vincent Paul Hess. He passed away on Feb. 13, 2000.
Mrs. Hess grew up in both Breese and Carlyle. She attended Sacred Heart Academy School in Belleville, earning a degree in English.

She taught for a year before she was married. She and her husband moved northeast of Marine, where she lived ever since. She was happy to be a farmer’s wife, taking pride in raising more than 500 chickens at one time.
She was an avid reader and spent many hours helping her children and grandchildren with their education. She loved to grow flowers and talk politics and was a St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan.
She was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Marine and the church Altar Society. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Becker-Reding American Legion Post 702 and the Madison County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include sons, Vincent P. (Carol Sue) Hess Jr. of Alhambra and Gerard W. “Jerry” (Marie) Hess of Marine; daughters, Mary E. (Stephen) Haarmann of Edwardsville and Catherine A. “Kay” (Mark) Wingate of Huntley, Ill.; grandchildren, Cory M. (Sheryl) Hess of Alhambra, Eric C. (Carissa) Hess of Edwardsville, Sasha M. (David) Keiser of Marine, Jill K. (Jim) Klostermann of Highland, Christopher J. Haarmann of Hamel, Crystal M. (Keith) Bradley of Marine, Lindsay A. (Rob) Eakin of Glen Carbon; step-grandchildren, Kelli M. (Joe) Rizzo of Woodstock, Ill., and Andy S. Windgate of Hampshire, Ill.; great-grandchildren, Kyle M. Hess of Alhambra, Paige E. Hess of Edwardsville, Olivia M. Keiser of Marine, Nathan I. Klostermann of Highland, Justin P. Klostermann of Highland, Hailey K. Klostermann of Highland, Margaret Elizabeth “Maggie” Bradley of Marine, Tyler V. Bradley of Marine; and step-great-grandchildren, Penelope Jewel Rizzo of Woodstock, Ill., and Lucas Alexander Rizzo of Woodstock, Ill.
She was also preceded in death by her parents.
