SIUE volleyball senior Kristen Torre, a Highland native, was named to the Cougar Classic All-Tournament Team on Saturday.
Torre, a 2012 graduate of Highland High School, led the Cougars with nine kills against Louisiana Tech and added 10 against Northern Kentucky. The Cougar senior needs 38 more kills to become the ninth player in school history to record 1,000 career kills.
“I have been putting in a lot of work this preseason to meet some of the goals I have set for myself this season,” Torre said. “I am excited for these next two weeks of no conference play for our team to build upon our strengths so we are ready for conference play.”
SIUE volleyball responded strongly from a loss early Saturday but dropped a five-setter to Northern Kentucky to close out the tournament. The Cougars dropped to 1-5 overall with a 25-27, 25-21, 25-20, 18-25, 7-15 loss to Northern Kentucky. Louisiana Tech upended the Cougars 25-21, 25-21, 25-21.
“It really didn’t end how we had hoped it would but I think our team learned a lot from that experience,” Torre said. “We were playing better at the end of the tournament than the beginning so I look at that as a positive. One of the goals for our team this year is be better than the previous match. And I think you could see that mindset in a lot of our team this weekend.”
