Former East St. Louis coach, broadcaster faces cocaine charge

A former East St. Louis Senior High School coach on Wednesday was charged with cocaine possession by St. Clair County prosecutors.

Maurice Scott Jr., 52, of 95 Hillside Lane near Belleville, was charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance. The charge listed the drug as cocaine and the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department investigated the case.

Scott was arrested at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at his home by deputies from the sheriff's department and U.S. Marshal's Service. Bail was set at $20,000.

Scott was formerly East Side's baseball coach and assistant basketball coach, as well as a Cahokia High School coach. He was known for broadcasting games and obtaining donations of game tickets and equipment through his connections with the St. Louis Rams.

Scott was an all-star athlete when he attended school in East St. Louis.

The sheriff's Drug Tactical Unit investigated the case, which began in March and involved cocaine possession in East St. Louis.
