Centreville man accused of shooting 7-year-old girl, four others

A 20-year-old Centreville man has been charged with shooting five people, including a 7-year-old girl, following an altercation last weekend.

Zeric D. McKinney, of 4922 Tudor Ave., was charged by St. Clair County State's Attorney Brendan Kelly's office Friday with five counts of aggravated battery with a firearm.

Centreville Detective Sgt. DeMarius Thomas said the victims ranged in ages from 7 to 28.

The bullet that struck the 7-year-old girl in her buttocks broke her pelvis. She is expected to recover fully from her injuries. Thomas said two of the victims are brother and sister. The 7-year-old is the daughter of one of the victims. The victims suffered bullet wounds to their legs, back, foot and ankle and buttocks. Everyone is expected to make a full recovery.

The victims were all standing around outside talking and celebrating the Fourth of July in the 4700 block of Piggott Avenue at the Ernest Smith Apartments when the gunman opened fire on the morning of July 5.

Thomas said the shooting is linked to some kind of altercation that occurred earlier in the day between the suspect and an unknown individual.

Thomas said police have not recovered the weapon.

McKinney was being held at the Centreville jail on Saturday and on Monday he will be transported to the St. Clair County Jail.

Thomas wants anyone who may have seen or heard something in reference to this case to contact him at the Centreville Police Department at 618-332-1184.
