East St. Louis homicide victim identified as 20-year-old Springfield man

Police have identified a 20-year-old man who was killed early Wednesday in East St. Louis.

The victim was Eugene Coleman of Springfield, according to St. Clair County Coroner Rick Stone.

Coleman's body was found lying in the street in the 1200 block of McCasland Avenue at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. He died of a gunshot wound.

It was not immediately clear why Coleman was in East St. Louis but it is believed he had been living in Cahokia the last few months.

Police were dispatched to the area after they received a call reporting shots fired in the area. "When police arrived on scene they found the victim's lifeless body. He was wearing a back pack," said Assistant Police Chief Ronald Ike said.

Ike said police do not have any suspects or a motive in the killing. They did not recover a weapon.

It was the 14th homicide in the city this year and the first homicide this month.
