Officer spots loaded rifle during Caseyville traffic stop; man arrested

An East St. Louis man was charged Monday with felony unlawful use of a weapon after he was found to have a loaded rifle at hand in his vehicle.

James D. Davis, 20, of the 1900 block of Bond Avenue, was pulled over at 10:45 Saturday night for a minor traffic violation on Illinois 157 near its intersection with Petroff Drive in Caseyville, according to police.

Once the car was stopped, the officer spotted a loaded SKS rifle in the front of the passenger compartment. The weapon was not in a case and was ready to fire.

Davis, who was also found to be driving on a suspended license, was arrested without incident. He was taken to the St. Clair County Jail where he is being held on $10,000 bail.
