Illinois State Police are investigating a fatal crash that left a bicyclist dead in Granite City.
At 10:56 p.m. Aug. 28 a driver struck a 54-year-old Granite City man who was riding west on East Chain of Rocks Road near Warson Road, said Illinois State Police Trooper Calvin Dye.
The car was driving behind the bicyclist when the front passenger side of the vehicle struck the bicyclist, Dye said.
"It is believed that the force of the impact knocked the rider onto the front windshield of the car, then he fell into the middle of the roadway," Dye said.
Though the accident happened at night, the rider was not wearing reflective clothing and the bike was not illuminated, Dye said.
The driver left the scene, Dye said.
A passerby called for medical assistance and the bicyclist was taken to a St. Louis hospital where he later died. The bicyclist's name was not released.
Dye said police have a "person of interest" in the case.
