Police: Thieves targeting cars in Waterloo

Thieves targeting unlocked cars are at it again in the metro-east.

According to police reports, more than 20 people have been the victims of thieves who have stolen items from cars on and around Cody, Summerfield and Shamrock drives in Waterloo.

Police say the cars that were targeted were left unlocked. Purses, electronics and other easy-to-carry items were taken.

In August, O'Fallon police reported several cars were burglarized on South Walnut Street and Amy Drive.

In July, an alleged thief was arrested when police in Fairview Heights said he tried to break into a car in which two officers were conducting surveillance in an effort to find the person responsible for a string of 11 auto burglaries.

Belleville, Columbia and Granite City have also had issues with multiple cars being burglarized during the summer months.

Other victims in Waterloo may not have been discovered yet. Police are asking anyone who thinks his or her car was burglarized -- and people who saw anything suspicious -- to call 618-939-3377.
