A police officer was dragged about 30 feet after a suspected drunk driver allegedly attempted to flee from a traffic stop in Swansea.
Officer Eric Rohn stopped Richard A. Lopez at about 2 a.m. Wednesday on suspicion of speeding on Old Collinsville Road. According to Swansea police, Rohn suspected that Lopez might be intoxicated, and asked him to exit the vehicle.
Police said that Lopez attempted to drive away, dragging Rohn approximately 30 feet along the road. The car then ran through a sign and ended up in a ditch.
Rohn then had to subdue Lopez, according to the release, and was able to take him into custody. Rohn was treated by medical personnel at the scene for minor injuries.

“Police officers risk their lives every day they pin on the badge and go to work,” said Swansea Police Chief Steve Johnson. “At 2 a.m., Officer Rohn was on the streets doing his job. Stopping just one impaired driver may save the lives of an entire family. I am proud Officer Rohn did his job with exceptional professionalism and restraint, and most importantly, made it home to his own loved ones.”
Lopez has been charged with four felony counts, one misdemeanor and a traffic violation, including aggravated driving under the influence, resisting a police officer, aggravated fleeing, obstructing identification and driving on a suspended license. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
