Fairview Heights police announced Thursday evening they released the family member who they say shot and killed Roland Garnett Lewis Sr., 52, in his home during an argument Tuesday night.
According to a statement posted to the department’s website, police handed the case over to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s office.
“The case has been taken under advisement. The suspect in this case has been released pending further investigation,” the announcement stated.
The department hasn’t released any information about the family member who they said shot Lewis following an argument at about 10:30 p.m. in a home in the 100 block of Sheffield Court on Tuesday. Lewis suffered a single gunshot and died from the wound, despite the efforts of the officer who arrived first at the scene and attempted to save his life.

The family member was taken into custody by Belleville police shortly after the shooting and was turned over to Fairview Heights officers. An earlier statement from the department said the investigation into Lewis’ death “has centered on” the individual who is now free.
Police referred questions to State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly, who couldn’t be reached for comment Thursday evening.
