The Southwestern Illinois College Board of Trustees on Wednesday approved a 5-year contract with full-time faculty and took the first step toward approving its 2015 fiscal year budget.
"It includes a first year compensation freeze and approximately 2 percent in pay increases for the subsequent four years," SWIC spokesman Mike Fleming said of the contract with faculty. "Plus, it includes an approximately 2 percent 'step' increase based on the faculty members placement on the salary schedule."
Fleming said the tentative budget, totaling $67,768,097, would be a less than half a percentage point increase over the 2014 fiscal year budget of $67,481,720.
Pay increases for employees accounted for a .60 percent rise in budget figures and were met with a .62 percent decrease in non-salary expenses to balance things out, according to Fleming.
The board ordered department heads to decrease the school budget by 3 percent from the 2013 fiscal year by the 2015 fiscal year with cuts across the board. But Fleming said the goal was reached a year ahead of time in the 2014 fiscal year which is currently underway.
The tentative approval of the budget calls for it to be placed on public display for at least 30 days after which a public hearing will be held. Only after that can the budget be formally approved, Fleming said. It is expected to be completed in about two months.
In other business, SWIC President Georgia Costello announced that members of 49 families were able to take classes at SWIC this summer because of the school's Kids' Club program.
A total of 81 kids participated in the program while family members combined to take 104 hours worth of classes, according to Costello.
The board on Wednesday also approved:
* Plans to renovate the Information Sciences Building on the Belleville campus. Unterbrink Construction of Greenville has submitted a bid of $589,787 to do the work.
* A bid of $542,198 from Shay Roofing in Belleville to replace the roof of the Belleville Campus Intramural Gym Building and Storage Building 2.
* The appointment of Steve Campo as interim head coach of the men's basketball team until a permanent head coach can be found.
