Cahokia High School students and staff are mourning the loss of a math teacher who died the day before his 36th birthday.
Cory Herschler, of Belleville, died Friday morning at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’Fallon. The cause of death was not released.
He taught at the high school for 13 years, according to Cahokia District 187 Superintendent Art Ryan.
Never miss a local story.
An obituary for Herschler states that he worked with many seniors on their college finances in that time and was in the process of setting up a fund to continue helping students who needed financial aid in order to attend college.
“Cory loved his school and his students,” the obituary states.
The family is asking for donations to the Cory Herschler Memorial Scholarship at Cahokia High School in his memory, according to the obituary.
Ryan said he planned to cancel classes at the high school Wednesday, so students and staff could travel to Herschler’s hometown of Quincy for the funeral.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Quincy. A visitation will take place from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.
Herschler is survived by his parents and brother.
