St. Clair County property owners have until 5 p.m. today to pay the final installment due on their 2008 property taxes.

St. Clair County taxpayers can pay their bills by cash, check or money order, either by mail postmarked by midnight, in person at Treasurer Charles Suarez's office at 10 Public Square in Belleville, or at most banks in the county.

Credit card payments using MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express may be made online at www.co.st-clair.il.us/tax.htm or by phone, 825-2707. A convenience charge based on a sliding scale will be applied.

The treasurer's office does not accept credit card payments at the office.

St. Clair County taxpayers also can pay online through an electronic check service. A charge of $1.40 will be applied.

After today, penalties will be assessed.

In Madison County, the third of four installments was due on Friday. The final installment of 2008 property taxes for Madison County property owners is due Jan. 6.
