Police are investigating the discovery of a decomposed body along the Mississippi River in East St. Louis.
East St. Louis Police Chief Lenzie Stewart said the body was found about 9:45 a.m. Sunday near the Casino Queen.
St. Clair County Coroner Rick Stone said the body appears to be that of a black male. He said a tentative identification has been made.
Stone said the body appeared to have been in the Mississippi River since the middle of June.
East St. Louis Detective Michael Floore said police have one report of a missing man that was made on June 17. Floore said police are looking into that aspect.
Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Dave Wasmuth said the body was dressed in orange Dickies-brand shorts and white Nike tennis shoes. A white Faded Glory-brand shirt with orange stripes was found near the body.
As of Sunday, investigators had not determined a cause of death. Stone said an autopsy is scheduled for today.
Floore said the investigation was being turned over to Illinois State Police.
Wasmuth asked that anyone with information call Illinois State Police at 346-3523 or Crimestoppers at 866-371-8477.
Wasmuth said fishermen found the body on the bank of the river.
