State encourages residents to test for radon

In honor of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency is encouraging people to test their homes for radon, and is hosting a poster contest.

Radioactive gas is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, and radon has been found in every county in Illinois. Approximately 1,100 people die in Illinois every year due to radon-related lung cancer.

In recognition of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, the agency is holding a radon poster contest to educate children about their risk of exposure. The poster must depict the need to test for radon in homes and the health risks involved. Students ages 9-14 can enter, the deadline is March 1.
