In honor of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency is encouraging people to test their homes for radon, and is hosting a poster contest.
Radioactive gas is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, and radon has been found in every county in Illinois. Approximately 1,100 people die in Illinois every year due to radon-related lung cancer.
In recognition of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, the agency is holding a radon poster contest to educate children about their risk of exposure. The poster must depict the need to test for radon in homes and the health risks involved. Students ages 9-14 can enter, the deadline is March 1.
For more information about the poster contest go to: www.TakeActionOnRadon.illinois.gov. Or go to: www.radon.illinois.gov to learn more about how to protect your home from radon.
