SACRAMENTO — A police synopsis filed in court papers sheds startling new light on what happened the day Quran Mahammed Jones allegedly beat Scott Hawkins to death in their dorm suite before he was shot by police officers responding to a report of a disturbance.

The summary said three Sacramento State University police officers said that when they entered Room 1032 at the school's American River Courtyard dorm they were confront with Jones in the common area of the suite holding a knife with "a crazed look in his eyes."

One officer later told investigators that Jones' "eyes were wide open and one eye was looking one way and the other eye was looking the other way."

"His tongue was hanging out of his mouth," the officer said. "He looked really strange. The whole time I saw him, he had his tongue hanging out of his mouth."

Murder and assault charges have been filed against Jones, who turned 20 on Friday. He hasn't been formally charged in court because he remains hospitalized in the wake of the Oct. 21 rampage.
