Government assistance is lacking

I have worked hard all my life, but cannot any longer due to health reasons. I applied for state assistance while awaiting disability approval, as I currently have no income. I am not proud of it, but isn't that the purpose, to provide temporary help?

I was approved for Medicaid so I can see a doctor and was given an allowance for food. That's great and I appreciate it very much. However, I was not given any cash allowance. Why? Because I live with and care for my elderly, ailing mother who is on a limited income and whose finances are handled by a third party. I still need cash to purchase gas to shop for food and medication copays, among other bills.

Why do we have second and third generations living on welfare all their lives while many could work, then someone like me can't get temporary cash assistance, which is why the system was created to begin with? What am I missing?
