Taxes a turnoff for military retirees

Great article featuring retired Air Force colonel Jim Harper. I served with Jim years ago when we were both lieutenants at Grand Forks Air Force Base, N.D. I agree with his points as well as those of Ben VanMetre citing reasons why Illinois ranks toward last in retiree locations.

We moved here 12 years ago to be near our grandchildren after living in northern Virginia on my last Air Force assignment and working as a defense contractor. My main gripe is property taxes. I've written countless times about our high taxes and Van Metre is exactly right, we have too many units of government and too much overhead in our fractured school districts.

We have great schools in most areas of St Clair County but we have too many administrators. Townships are no longer needed nor are small road districts.

We have a home in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia near Washington and our property taxes are $995 a year. For the same home here, the taxes would be $3,500.

I could write about how many tax dollars are wasted both in Springfield and in this county and about one-party govern- ment, but that would require too much space.
