The Department of Veterans Affairs needs more doctors; really? How about all of those individuals who go to medical school and receive internships on the U.S. government who are required to serve at least five years at a VA hospital to repay their loans for their education? Five years may not be enough but it would be a step in the right direction.
After the Bush administration's downsizing of the military medical establishment, there needs to be a new look at manpower issues for the military/veterans medical needs. It won't be fixed overnight.
The Bush administration closed almost all military base hospitals. Individuals were then sent to civilian hospitals for care and the base hospitals were turned into sick call clinics and specialized care facilities not available at civilian hospitals. There are two VA hospitals in St. Louis.
