Winter survived with help

We just got through one of our roughest winters in more than 30 years. I want to thank all the churches and agencies who pitched in and helped in such a quiet manner to make it all work in helping the elderly, the homeless and those without utilities get through this winter.

St. Clair County Intergovernmental Grants Department helped with utilities and relocating homeless people into apartments. Catholic Urban Programs and the Salvation Army provided motel vouchers. The St. Vincent conferences helped with utilities. St. Vincent de Paul Cosgrove's Kitchen provided meals for Lessie Bates Continuum of Care, which provided shelter for more than 40 nights. Many other churches and agencies did street patrol, including the Belleville and East St. Louis Police, who brought in the homeless. Local hospitals provided medical care.

We were able to get through winter with everyone working together without any real tragedies. May God bless all who participated in any way in alleviating the challenges of the winter season.
