Braxton offers little benefit

Monsignor John Myler's July 2 report to the Belleville News- Democrat on the $90,000 raised for Catholic education at Bishop Edward Braxton's birthday bash sounds exciting. But the rest of the story is a downer.

I understand that the money raised is to be placed into a foundation named in honor of Braxton, which means that little money will actually become available to diocesan Catholic schools.

Furthermore, few Catholics in the Belleville Diocese know that the troublesome leadership of Braxton has resulted in a sizeable decrease in contributions to the annual diocesan appeal during his tenure. This decrease is estimated to be 40 percent lower than the previous bishop's annual appeal and has resulted in the loss of any financial assistance to the three diocesan high schools and Sister Thea Bowman grade school.

The end result of Braxton's contribution to Catholic education: Honor to Braxton; loss of financial assistance to Catholic education.
