Recently BND letter writer and St. Clair County Board candidate Tim Buchanan pontificated about county elected officials being eligible for unemployment insurance. Unfortunately for Buchanan, he only demonstrated his ignorance of state law.
Elected officials cannot collect unemployment insurance but all other county employees are eligible. Thus, the county has established a self- insurance program that pays the actual unemployment claims rather than pay the much more expensive state-mandated rate.
Too bad Buchanan did not bother to gather some easily available facts before trying to campaign in the paper with falsehoods. As an ex-public official and public employee collecting multiple retirement benefits, you would think he would know better.
