The election is Tuesday. The alleged Non-Good-Government-Party (NGGP) independents are going negative. Mayor Mark Eckert is backing candidates in all eight wards. They like to do whisper campaigns , spread falsehoods, misinformation and place negative fliers on some doors.
By attacking an independent, logic says you're not independent. If the only way you can bring yourself up is by tearing someone down, that says a lot about your character.
Is questioning something being obstructive or being informed? In the past 20 years have your property values gone up or down? Do you feel safe in the city? Are the roads in your neighborhoods good?
Instead of looking at individual “no” votes, ask how many times the NGGP members have opposed the mayor. Will candidates being backed by the NGGP oppose the mayor when the mayor’s vision is against common sense, proper fiscal management and not in the taxpayers’ best interest? Past records say no.
The NGGP independents now stand for more police and fixing our streets. What a flip-flop. Where have they been the last 20 years when we’ve seen our taxes increase and home values drop?
The mayor doesn’t seem happy winning every vote, even if at 11-5, because he wants to return to the days of one-party rule when he has 16 rubber stamps who know their role and do as their told.
That is unacceptable. Belleville needs true independents who will do proper due diligence and scrutiny for the taxpayer’s best interest before they vote.
