I asked an alderman why Belleville would pay $1 million for Calhoun park aka Bicentennial Park when Bob Calhoun paid only $150,000 a few years previously.
The alderman said Calhoun was offered almost $1 million by a developer who was going to build a bunch of cheap Section 8 houses and Belleville has too many poor people already, so the city bought the property and made a park instead.
I think, as Yogi would say, “That’s deja vu all over again,” as the Catholic Church was going to sell the Meredith Home to a developer who was going to use it for juvenile delinquents or some unsavory types and the city didn’t want those types in downtown Belleville. So Belleville paid $500,000 to the Catholic Church and the building sits there, still waiting for something to happen.
