Our readers comment on the week’s news in our Sound-off column.
The Supreme Court could someday redefine marriage to include one man, three women (or vice versa) and a dog. However, it will never be able to redefine the sacrament of matrimony.
If there is any thought about Obama not being a patriot. And is out to destroy the United States, you only have to consider that over the years in celebrating, the D-Day invasion for WWII, there’s been only four occasions when a United States president did not attend those ceremonies. 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 — all when Obama was president. But he’s got time to visit Kenya, and Ethiopia and any other place except where our veterans gave the ultimate sacrifice. This man is a real piece of work.
Why hasn’t the Swansea-Fairview Heights area not worked on providing a full time ambulance service? For years now, we have had to rely on our private ambulance service. If either one of these services get tied up with other calls, an ambulance can respond as far away as West Belleville, Lebanon, or even Freeburg. Highland, O’Fallon, Shiloh, Collinsville all have a city-run full-time ambulance/paramedic service. It’s about time they do that for this area.
About the lawmakers’ pay: According to some, the cost of living has gone up 229 percent since they last checked. My social security check hasn’t gone up like that.
I have to say Mr. Reichert has had some very good letters lately. And I’m sorry that we won’t be hearing from Larry McClintick due to his passing. I agree with Mr. Pitts and his column about hypocrisy — first time i was able to finish reading one of his columns. As far as black lives matter, they need to be more concerned and pay attention to the large percentage of black babies being lost to abortion. That should matter more than the thugs who have committed crimes.
I read in the paper and see in the news about these pensions. I’m sorry, it’s time to come to an end. Forget the pensions and let people like normal people, go out and make a living, and decide to save on their own. My father said save for a rainy day. These people should, too.
I’m calling about Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert and the flags on the policemen’s uniforms. He doesn’t give a care about the American flag, or the veterans because, if he did, he would have flown the American flag at half-staff like everyone else did for the veterans that were killed.
In the news
A friend of mine asked me, have you noticed how often Harmony Emge 175 School District has been in the newspaper and on TV since Pam Leonard has been made superintendent? He’s right — it has been in a lot.
About the tree-planter article on squirrels: That’s nuts as in squirrel nuts. I was an executive with the largest tree farmer in the U.S., and we planted our trees in an orderly manner. And had to remove trees randomly planted by squirrels. Squirrels are a rodent, and the caller who values them would not defend their value if he were to find a squirrel in a leaky roof or boring holes through interior walls.
All lives matter: black and white, hispanic. When news media keeps bringing up only black lives matter, if that had been a group stating only white lives matter, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would come out denouncing that. Parts of the media, turn off the TV especially when it comes to nonsense.
It seems all the new hires that Cahokia Mayor Curtis McCall has hired failed to teach them a few things. The grass cutters, don’t know how to cut grass, don’t know how to keep the grass out of the streets. There is an ordinance against that. Secondly you need to teach your employees how to stop at stop signs. How about teaching your employees how to follow rules.
I saw something touching on the news yesterday: A bunch of people cleaning out Ferguson, Mo. — voluntarily coming out in the heat and working. Not the thugs or their parents, volunteers cleaned up after the thugs.
The Democrats decided to rename the Jefferson-Jackson dinner the Harry Truman Dinner. I guess they are getting ready to chisel Jefferson’s face off Mount Rushmore.
Your opinion on July 29 stated the Illinois voters gave Gov. Bruce Rauner a mandate. Rauner won with 50.4 percent of the vote against the most unpopular governor in the country, who he outspent 3-to-1 spending $69 million. Plus he lied and failed to tell the public what his plans were. He has no mandate, he is a lame duck and has been since day one. Get over it.
I think anyone on welfare should also be on some type of contraception. I don’t care if your religion says it’s a sin, its shameful when others are supporting your growing family. This is wrong on all levels. I think if you become pregnant on welfare you should lose some of your support. If people were penalized maybe there wouldn’t be so many children suffering from lack of parenting.
The other day you printed a guest view point from someone from Chicago. We don’t need to be lectured about midgets or any other things from anybody living in Chicago.
I want to thank the News Democrat for publishing the story about Glenn McCoy. Since I had never seen a picture of him, I assumed that he was just another run of the mill, bitter old teabagger, racist-type of which there are so many in Belleville. It occurred to me that maybe he is not as racist as he appears to be from the content of his editorial cartoons. I am almost beginning to like him.
The national media is going after Bill Cosby’s wife and calling her an enabler. I find it ironic that one of the greatest enablers of all time is now wanting to become the Democratic nominee for president. I don’t’ get it.
I just had the misfortune of dealing with vehicle inspection in Madison County. This whole plan is a rigged thing for auto shops who pay the fee to get approved by them to do repairs. This needs to be done away with. What purpose does it serve other than kickbacks from repair shops?
Gays in Scouting
Contrary to what you might believe, homosexual Boy Scout Leaders are not acceptable. Why do they have to horn in on the Scouts? They have ruined the military, and now they are working on the Scouts. They should start their own organization, the Gay Scouts of America.
We were listening to the news, some uneducated moron saying the Confederate flags laying in the grass was an act of terrorism. I think an act of terrorism is when the blacks took over the town of Ferguson and kept people from leaving their houses.
Time to cry
I can hear them screaming at the old East Side Health District now. Take a look at yourself and the Democrats that run your operation, they have let you down. This new governor has not let you down, he is trying to save this state. Cry to the Democrats in Springfield, they have allowed this to happen.
St. Clair County Sheriff Rick Watson is not running — no surprise. The Democratic political machine took over, because with a name like Baricevic, the machine is well oiled, in full gear and ready to send their candidate into the ring.
I feel like a human yo-yo. Gas drops 20 cents, goes up 25 cents. Drive to Lebanon and it’s cheaper. It doesn’t make sense. We are being gouged by the oil dealers and something should be done about protecting the consumer.
As an attorney, I’ve worked many cases in St. Clair County and now worked with C.J. Baricevic. He is a poor attorney and a poor candidate for Congress. He knows nothing as an attorney. The only thing he would do is what his daddy, Chief Judge, John Baricevic, tells him to do.
I’m calling about the safety of movie-goers. Wouldn’t it be worth it to hire an undercover security person? Warning signs could be posted in the lobby.
I live in State Rep. Charlie Meyer’s district. He wants servicemen not from Illinois to carry a firearm and he wants highways named after people who have died. The bills are important, but how about a bill about reinstating the Circuit Breaker Program for seniors? A Circuit Breaker check helped me get a few necessities that I couldn’t otherwise afford.
I’m calling about The East Side Health District and the fruit that is pictured. I live in a community east of St. Louis, I’m below the federal poverty level. I would like to have some of that fruit. Every resource I check out in Madison County is a dead end. How do I get the fruit when you are below the poverty level? Please let me know.
St. Clair Township Trustee Jayne Wells voted present on the township board vote that allowed Swansea to charge township residents 30 percent more for sewer services than Swansea residents. Even though she voted present, she still participated in all of the closed session discussions related to the negotiations. She should have recused herself from participating in any of those discussions because what she learned most likely leaked over to the Swansea Board by way of her husband, Swansea Trustee Bryan Wells.
I just saw a St. Clair Township street sweeper going down the road with “John ‘Skip’ Kernan Highway Commissioner” printed in huge letters on the back of it. What a waste of taxpayer money. This guy is a perfect example of why the public hates politicians.
Since there is a separation of Church and State in the USA and Muslims believe religion trumps secular authority, shouldn’t we ban Muslims from coming to the USA?
What do they know?
This marks the last week for two of St. Elizabeth’s administrators. After testifying for the need for a regional hospital, both St. Elizabeth’s CEO and CMO left for jobs elsewhere. Wouldn’t a CEO want to stay to help grow the regional hospital? Wouldn’t a chief medical officer want to help build its medical staff? Do they know something that the community does not know?
How much could it possibly cost to run the St. Clair County Fair? As a vendor/exhibitor for many years, last year I was charged $500 for the week of the fair. If there were over 100 vendors in the Expo Hall paying this amount, that’s $50,000. Not to mention that they rent the speedway out for $1,500 a day and they get a fee from the ride company and a percent of all food sales. Where does all this money go? They say without the $65,000 from the state they cant afford to put on the fair. Something is funny here. My concern is tax dollars over the years being used for this event and put into the pockets of the greedy fair board.
