“(I)t is not needed. It is socialism. It moves the country in a direction which is not good for anyone, whether they be young or old. … It is not only socialism — it is brazen socialism.” Sen Carl Curtis, R-NE 7/8/65
“I was there, fighting the fight, one of the twelve, voting against Medicare because in 1965 we knew it wouldn’t work,” Sen. Bob Dole, R-KS 10/24/95
A examination of the record will reveal that, arguably, the three most important pieces of legislation of the last 100 years for the common citizen have been vehemently opposed by the Republican Party as socialism. It is interesting to note current presidential hopeful Jeb Bush is openly speaking of, in his words, “phasing out” Medicare.
Do you believe Affordable Care Act, Medicare or Social Security is socialism? Are you hypocritical if you believe they are socialism and choose to benefit from the programs? Would you agree with Sen. Dole that in the past 50 years Medicare has not worked? Or would you agree with President Johnson: “No longer will older Americans be denied the healing miracle of modern medicine. No longer will illness crush and destroy the savings that they have so carefully put away over a lifetime so that they might enjoy dignity in their later years. No longer will young families see their own incomes, and their own hopes, eaten away simply because they are carrying out their deep moral obligations to their parents...”
