Swimming pools and splash pads have been in the conversation in recent days. The BND Opinion page spoke about the children in East St. Louis cooling off during these hot days at the local splash pad. Belleville’s kids don’t have that option. I guess they could cool off in some of the many potholes in Belleville streets after a heavy rain.
The former member of the city council, Lillian Schneider, admonished the city council Aug. 3 about the lack of a pool in a city which is the largest south of Springfield.
Belleville officials knew as far back as 2007 that something had to be done with the pool and choose to kick the can down the road, which led to the ultimate closure and destruction of the pool. It might be remembered how the big phony Mayor Mark Eckert lamented about how he used to take his children to the pool. This just days before the demolition. Lillian Schneider made a valid point the other evening when she stated a new pool might have been built on or near the Illinois 15 corridor and may have spurred other developments. The truth, is this is not something that a bunch of old men, i.e. city council members, understand and care much about.
This old man visited the splash pad in O’Fallon with my 2-year-old grandson. It must have taken 10 years off me. I met a number of folks that were having a great time like me and my grandson. When I asked were they were from, you guessed it, Belleville. Thank you O’Fallon.
Never miss a local story.
