Thank you, Belleville News-Democrat, for your coverage and editorial addressing the cruel state budget situation and the scary, seemingly tangled financial record keeping in East St. Louis city government. The governor and the state legislators should be ashamed of themselves for the budget deadlock that is causing suffering for people across this entire state.
I was a member of the state Financial Advisory Authority from 1999-2010, five years of which I served as acting chair. By state statute, the FAA was disbanded in 2013 after East St. Louis became solvent. I am disappointed that the immediate past East St. Louis treasurer was not bonded and that the financial records from his watch appear to be in disarray.
Charlotte Moore was the East St. Louis treasurer during my time on the FAA. She is bonded and competent. Thank you Charlotte Moore for coming back as East St. Louis treasurer and thank you BND for reporting the East St. Louis financial situation.
I use this opportunity to wish new Mayor Emeka Jackson-Hicks well and to extend best wishes to students, parents, teachers and school staff as they begin the new school year.
Meanwhile, our governor and legislators need to work together night and day to overcome the state budget deadlock. I suggest political compromise and pragmatism as possible remedies ... Political Science 101.
