It was sheer genius of the Belleville News-Democrat when it ran two Opinion articles, side by side, on Aug. 8 on page C3. One article, by a Rekha Basu, painstakingly recounted and detailed the events leading to the death of Cecil, the lion that was hunted and killed and whose head would be mounted on the hunter’s wall. The writer stated that though people knew this was going on, and that it’s legal, “it didn’t hit you viscerally until you saw photos of the majestic creature juxtaposed against the hideous details of his death.”
Now, the other article, by a Mary Sanchez, spent a great amount of energy to vilify the people who exposed Planned Parenthood’s profitable business of their grisly acquiring of baby organs through committing abortions. The writer seems not to mind the hideous details of the deaths of innocent children, and that, in fact, their organs would be sold for profit. It was tragic for the lion named Cecil and it was wrong. But here there were two articles about death, one calling for outrage for an animal, and one, to shoot the messenger who is trying desperately to protect children. The irony of these articles being placed opposite one another was revealing. Good job, BND, for helping expose our nation’s misguided life priorities.
