Who is needy? Dr. Mark Defrancesco (BND Sept. 6) argues that Planned Parenthood is the only organization capable of delivering health services to women and hence should continue to have federal funding. He asserts that without Planned Parenthood, “especially low-income women would have nowhere else to turn.”
Let’s look at that organization’s St. Louis offices. They are in the affluent high-rent district of the Central West End, at least a couple of bus rides away from poor people. At the same time, there are 15 neighborhood health centers in St. Louis, including the long-standing Grace Hill House centers, in real neighborhoods serving real people. These might qualify for federal funding just as likely as the Double Ps.
And it looks as if, as far as St. Louis goes, the doctor’s statement on their behalf has a hole in them as large as the space under the Arch. Or as large as that outfit’s hypocrisy.
